ABOUT THIS COFFEE AND PRODUCER

Pablo Andrés Guerrero, an architect born in Pasto, comes from a family that does not produce coffee. He began his agricultural activity in 1988 with cereal and fruit crops. But it was not until 2012 when he started with the cultivation of coffee.

Hacienda El Obraje is located in the municipality of Tangua, in the southern region of the department of Nariño, at an average altitude of 2200 meters above sea level, approximately 25 minutes from the capital of the department of Nariño. Fifty-five percent of the farm's area is set aside as an environmental reserve, where there is a wide variety of flora and fauna native to the region. Approximately 39 hectares are cultivated on the farm, where different varieties are distributed such as: caturra, castillo, maracaturra, geisha, typica, yellow bourbon, pink bourbon, moka, SL 28.

This moka lot starts with a traditional flotation sorting of the cherries. Next, the cherries are fermented for 120 hours in hermetically sealed tanks. Then, the cherries are shade dried for 8 days. Finally, the coffee is mechanically dried for 38 hours at 30’C.

WHY WE SELECTED THIS COFFEE

We're excited to work with Hacienda El Obraje for the first time, bringing one of Colombia's most respected farms into our lineup with a particularly unique release. This lot is a rare Moka varietal, a cultivar more commonly associated with Yemen, thoughtfully planted and cultivated in the Colombian Andes.

The anaerobic natural process amplifies the coffee's naturally expressive character, producing confectionary aromatics filled with wine-like fruit and warm spice. There are echoes of the profile that has made Yemeni coffees so distinctive, while still feeling unmistakably its own through a brighter, red fruit-driven expression.

The cup moves between sweet strawberry and ripe plum, with festive notes of nutmeg adding warmth throughout. A gentle black tea finish brings subtle tannins that give the coffee structure and help tie together its layered sweetness and spice.

The beans are strikingly small, a hallmark of the Moka varietal, while the cup delivers an impressive amount of depth and character. From the variety itself to the way it's expressed through El Obraje's careful processing, this is a coffee that offers something a little different from beginning to end.
