ABOUT THIS COFFEE AND PRODUCER

We are excited to be continuing our partnership with Jose and Pepe Jijon. This time, instead of Finca Soledad, we are featuring coffee from their collaborative project, Fincas del Putushio. Putushio is operated by Pepe Jijon and Francisco Vintimilla. Both producers are deeply respected for their care for quality and the coffee growing community in Ecuador, with Francisco being the first to plant coffee in the Putushio mountain region.

For this Typica Mejorado, the cherries are first depulped on the same day as harvest and then undergo a 16 hour fermentation in their mucilage. Then, the coffee is given a deep water rinse before being shade dried for 30 days. This low intervention process lets the high elevation Typica Mejorado show its innate and delicate characteristics.

WHY WE SELECTED THIS COFFEE

We’re excited to continue working with Pepe, Jose, Francisco, and the rest of the team as we launch our first coffee from the Fincas Del Putushio collaboration. This small and relatively recent addition to the Jijon family sits at very high altitude and has already begun to make a name for itself through lots that clearly express their terroir.

The level of care shows immediately in this very limited Typica Mejorado lot, which we feel fortunate to be able to share. The cup is deeply complex, opening with a clear grapefruit citrus note before moving into a savory, tart berry character that reminds us most of gooseberries. That quality briefly flashes up comparisons to great Kenyan coffee before moving on with more distinct terroir notes.

The brightness quickly gives way to a silky, sweet body, almost honey-like, with layers of soft, non-distinct florals that feel like a whole field of wild flowers. It’s a beautiful expression of place.

This is a lovely lot from a family who pour genuine passion into their work. We hope you enjoy this experience and that it’s just the beginning of many more coffees to come from Fincas Del Putushio.
