ABOUT THIS COFFEE AND PRODUCER

Yuri Ordóñez began his journey in agriculture 11 years ago during difficult times, when his mother gave him a small plot of land. With 200 Geisha trees and organic fertilizer as his only resource, Yuri decided to dedicate years of perseverance and sacrifice to achieving his first harvest. Over time, the quality of his coffee began to gain recognition, motivating him to participate in competitions. In 2021, he won first place in the Nariño Cup competition, a recognition that marked a turning point in his story, opening doors and strengthening his passion for coffee. Thanks to this rewarding achievement and his constant hard work, he has been able to build his home and continue pursuing dreams that once seemed far away.

This lot from Yuri begins with a 24 hour fermentation in sealed tanks followed by flotation sorting. Then, the cherries are de-pulped and undergo a second 24 hour fermentation with their mucilage in sealed tanks. Finally the coffee is washed twice and left to dry for 7 days on a traditional patio.

WHY WE SELECTED THIS COFFEE

We're excited to work with Yuri Ordóñez of El Salado for the first time, bringing another washed Gesha from Colombia that offers a distinctly different expression of the variety.

The cup opens with an acidity that reminds us of loquat before gradually shifting into the sweet, tangy character of pomelo. The fruit feels bright and expressive while remaining remarkably composed throughout the cup.

One of the more interesting aspects of this coffee is its aromatic profile. Alongside the florals is a subtle herbal quality that is reminiscent of the aromatics often found in Kenyan coffees, bringing to mind fresh rosemary without ever becoming savory. It adds an unexpected layer that makes the coffee especially engaging.

As the coffee cools, the finish becomes clean and elegant, lingering with a red tea-like quality that carries through the aftertaste. It's a thoughtful expression of a washed Colombian Gesha, revealing different layers as the cup continues to open.
