ABOUT THIS COFFEE AND PRODUCER
La Estrella Farm located in the municipality of La Unión, Nariño; has 8 hectares, of which 7 hectares are dedicated to the cultivation of coffee. The farm implements agroforestry systems with native tree species such as guamo, charcoal, and pine. Shading has a positive effect on water conservation, especially during periods of rainfall deficiency.
Lot #1: The lot called “La Jacoba” is located in the municipality of La Unión in the La Jacoba trail, 2 hours from the municipality of Buesaco. It is located at an average altitude of 2,200 meters above sea level and has varietal crops such as geisha, bourbon cider, and pink bourbon. Its production is 8,500 kg of dry parchment per year.
The producer of the La Estrella farm, Carlos Estrella is the third generation of coffee growers in his family, his grandparents shared their knowledge with the new generations, preserving the tradition of cultivation and harvesting of the bean, which defines the identity and tradition of the family business. Carlos began with the coffee agricultural activity in 2006 with the sowing of traditional varieties such as caturra and colombia, years later in the search for innovation and new market trends he began with the sowing of varieties such as: geisha, yellow bourbon, pink bourbon, cider bourbon and mocha.
This lot underwent a 48hr anaerobic fermentation as whole cherry before depulping.

WHY WE SELECTED THIS COFFEE
It’s safe to say that Colombia grown washed Geshas are one of our favorite terroir profiles to go after but we were very surprised by the slight flavor departure this one took us on. While incredible sweet peach flavors and effervescent florals immediately hit the palate on first taste, there are interesting white grape and pluot flavors that sometimes border on a nice sparkling white wine depending on how it's brewed. It’s complex and has lots of unique character while staying true to the stellar anaerobic washed geshas of this region. This is our first time working with Carlos Estrella and we will certainly be on the lookout for other exciting coffees from him in the future.
